What is Spiral Knights? This is hard to explain as the only way to understand it is to play it yourself, but a summary of the game mechanics and history is as follows
History
Reports have arisen stating that Spiral Knights had been open to the public in the past before, but none of these reports have been confirmed. Most players initially discovered it on November 12, 2009 the day it first came out. A figurative estimate of the number of average players on during this time was roughly around 20 to 40 players. This online community was very small and thus created closer bonds and friendships. Spiral Knights initially had around four different maps available to play, but the developers added another map within this time period.
The Spiral Knights game was later revealed to be only in beta test mode and thus it closed down on November 16, 2009. A full report of this ending can be found here.
What it is
This is the harder part. Spiral Knights can be classified as a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG). The setting of the game is considered futuristic, yet classical elements (swords, shields, helms) are used as well. This game can be played simply by registering on their website and then viewing their launch page. While it's not technically an in-browser game it does share the quick loading and ease of use commonly associated with browser games. Some of the features they have include:

Story

You have crashed. You are stranded. But you are not alone. The Spiral Knights have awoken on an unknown world. Their equipment stores have been raided and their starship, The Skylark, will not recover from the crash. But all is not lost. Taking refuge in a town called Haven they have begun a new mission. As a Spiral Knight, you must delve deep below the surface of the world into the mechanical labyrinth known as The Clockworks. This colossal complex of turning gears and unnatural machinery is filled with massive slabs of alien worlds and home to a legion of terrible monsters. This great machine is in constant motion and is always changing the worlds it creates. An exciting adventure awaits that will take you to the planet's very core, where the Spiral Knights will discover the purpose of The Clockworks and who or what created it. So take up your sword and join your fellow knights in a world that offers new adventures every day!
